Overview

OpenFOAM CFD (Open Field Operation and Manipulation, Computational Fluid Dynamics) is an open source software extensively used to get fluid problem solutions through their specialized libraries. The complete C++ modules run in a Linux operating system basis.

ParaView (Parallel Visualization Application) is a computer tool which can run under Windows OS. This tool has been designed to visualize data sets either small or very large.

As a powerful and strongly recognized tools, it is convenient at this time to learn them for their use in a short time future application (master’s thesis).

Objectives

-          To learn OpenFOAM CFD tools and tutorials on Linux OS with special attention in mesh generation.

-          To learn Paraview on Windows.

-          To create simple (small scale) example problems in OpenFOAM.

-          To visualize the result of these examples in Paraview.

-          To discuss issues related to the transition to the Real (Professor Dancey / Dillon) Problem.

Connection to the Real (Professor Dancey / Dillon) Problem

When water is moving in an open-channel (like a river), sediments are forced to move with the flow. There is a general theory which explain this phenomena in a simply way. According with this theory, particles are forced into the flow if the velocity of the flow reaches a critical value. Such a linear theory is not enough to explain what is really occurring in the vicinity of the particles, and how and why some particles are really moving under this critical velocity.

Professor Clinton Dancey and Brandon Dillon have been working in the Real Problem ”Incipien sediment motion in a turbulent, open-channel flow”. Last year, the project began to be developed by Brandon as a class project and now as his Master’s Thesis research. This research focuses in the turbulent flow in a 15m x 0.6m x 0.15m channel with a more detailed mesh at particle vicinity. The goal is to reproduce the experimental data by simulated data using OpenFoam and Paraview software.

The connection of the present course project with this Real Problem will be done at the end of this course in order to establish the goals for a new Master’s Thesis project.
